While Cooking….

I burnt up the pecans and the hash browns! I was devastated. No. I was mad! First of all, pecans are too expensive for me to burn them up and it was not a small amount! It was two cups!! The hash browns I burnt up were only a small amount; but since I just burnt up the pecans, it just added fuel to the fire!

How does a woman who knows how to cook burn up pecans? How does a woman who is no stranger to baking and roasting and broiling and frying and sautéing and boiling burn up the hash browns?

I was distracted! I was playing a game on my phone to pass the time. I had plenty of time but then I got engrossed with playing that game and lost track of time. The result…burnt pecans. You would think I’d learned my lesson! Nope, I got focused on making the filling for my pie and I forgot about the hash browns in the oven. By the time I remembered, they were burnt!

All I could do was shake my head. Distractions caused me to not only burn up food, but I also burnt up time. I had to cook the pecans all over again! If only I had been diligent to watch. If only I had fought the urge to play that time-wasting game. If only I had remained focused and relished the quiet time; using it to just be still and pray.

Watch. Fight. Pray.

I’m reminded of the song “O Happy Day” by the Edwin Hawkins Singers where they sing “He taught me how to watch, fight and pray.”

Watch. Fight. Pray.

Colossians 4:2 tells us to continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.

1 Corinthians 16:13 tells us to be watchful, stand firm in the faith.

We cannot allow ourselves to be distracted by the temptations or discouraged by the vicissitudes of life. As 1 Peter 5:8 tell us, “…be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour.” We must…

Watch. Fight. Pray.

There is a lot at stake.

Your peace of mind. Your joy. Your faith. Your love. Your present. Your future. Your eternity.

You have to watch, fight, and pray to keep them all in tact!

That day, I only lost some pecans and hash browns. But failing to watch, fight, and pray, will cause us to lose so much more!

Is it worth it?
